My reflective journal
After researching more into what I would have to do to work towards getting my dream job as a midwife I came across the Nursing and Midwifery access to HE course at Banbury and Bicester College. Having applied and interview date looming, the days went like minutes but the walk from my car to the college reception felt like an eternity. The saying ‘butterflies in my stomach’ was a complete understatement. Arriving in the laboratory, we were introduced to our interviewer, Amanda, and she went on to explain about the course and get us started on our little test. Test?! English and maths exams were tests I hadn’t done in five years! The feel of complete despair must have been apparent as Amanda grinned. I knew I could be going back to college and would be writing but not knowing I had to do a maths and English exam at the interview sent me into slight panic. Tests done and my one-to-one interview complete, I came away slightly hopeful. This may be due to the enthusiasm I showed in the interview or that I felt quite proud of how well I thought I wrote my English exam. To this day I am not yet certain to just how well I did in those exams but what it did teach me was that I performed well under pressure. Obviously, as I got onto the course! Having reflected on how differently things could have gone, I now wonder how else I can apply working under pressure to my academic and working life. In conclusion, I could have questioned whomever I spoke to on the phone how long the interview would take and what, if anything else other than the usual, would my interview entail. If the opportunity arose again for me to apply and interview for the course again I would most definitely do this. The understanding of how vital preparation for any task is now more important to me as both a learner and employee because no one situation will ever be the same.
