How Do You Think Golding Makes This Moment in the Novel so Frightening?

In the book Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the boys that have been abandoned on an island have a fear that there is a beast on the island. Different characters take it differently, some are more frightened than others. Golding makes this part of the novel particularly frightening by building up tension on a trip out to try to decide conclusively whether the beast exists.

Golding sets the scene in the opening paragraph to the scene where they go to try to find the beast, he mentions the way in which the boys were standing. “crouched together” implies that the boys are bent down trying to not be seen by the beast, it gives a sense of danger, showing that the boys need to be careful with every footstep that they take. The word together could mean that they need each other in the seek for the beast they need to work as a team, as they are unaware what the beast may do to them. Golding therefore makes this a frightening part implying that the boys need not to be spotted by the much feared beast, it conveys a sense on unknowing and builds up tension for what is going to happen next.

Golding shows describes how frightened and scared one boy in particular is about the hunt to find the beast when he mentions “Rodger lagging a little” shows us how Rodger feels about this hunt for the beast. He is “lagging” which means that he is walking very slowly trying to use the other boys as a shield from the beast. This therefore shows us how frightened the characters are of the hunt to find the beast and therefore makes the reader feel the same way.

Golding uses repetition to build up tension thus creating a more frightful mood, “Creep forward” is the phrase in which Golding repeats twice. By repeating this phrase it makes the phrase important and implies the way the boys have to be extremely careful on this quest to find the beast.
