Criminology appeals to me because I have always been interested in crime and criminal justice, my interests then further increased after being victimised in an assault and having to work with the police. The experience made me realise that crime is becoming an increasingly more relevant subject, especially in today’s society, and I would like to do my part in improving the society we live in by having a career in the police force. However to do this I feel it is crucial I have a criminology degree to strengthen my future application, especially when considering the budget cuts the police force have faced this past year. The main topics I am most eager about in the course are: the roles of media and culture which influence crime, crime and justice in the 19th century and of course police and police work.
Having studied History and Philosophy at a-level I have gained skills which will help me with this degree. They equally both require a great deal independent researching and reading, whilst comparing ideas with the rest of the class. It has prepared me for what the criminology degree course would entail and I feel confident I will be fully prepared for what university life requires from me. Studying General Studies and Extended Project as additional subjects have taught me how to identify and write long reasoned essay which argue both sides of every argument, and thus never thinking biasedly. Having also studied Law at AS I have a good idea of how the law system works and the roles important figures like the police and judges play in the law system.
In my last two years of secondary school, I decided to take part in the annual “Woodhouse Olympics”, a sporting event my school ran for all the primary schools in the local area. It was through this I showed team working skills and leadership running my own event for primary school pupils. In my first year of college I was also picked to be the tutor rep, this gave the responsibility of making sure my peers opinions...
