The ‘Hannibal’ was designed by Julian Brown, he is inspired to create fantastically designed products by animals. He designs products to not only look aesthetically pleasing but he aims for perfection with the engineering side of things. Brown is a post-modernist designer, he likes to build a relationship between the user and his products, it’s as if they have their own personality, and they’re character like.
The main purpose of ‘Hannibal’ is to dispense tape without the use of both hands, successfully Brown managed to make this a possibility by placing a substantial weight in the bottom of the dispenser. The middle section of the elephant looking dispenser (spine) flips open to reveal a roll of tape inside, this part is held in place with the standard component of a pin which is dressed up to resemble ‘eyes’ at both sides of the product. The part that flips open looks like the trunk of an elephant which has a ridged metal strip at the end to cut the tape. There is also other elephant like features that can noticed underneath the translucent plastic.
The tape dispenser is made from engineering polymers and steel, plastic is the main material used for this product. The plastic used has a matt finish to it and is also translucent. The advantages of using plastic for the manufactured material is that it comes in a variety of different colours as it can be coloured, it’s cheap to buy, a variety of different finishes can be carried out, it’s light weight and most importantly it is easily moulded to any shape or size. Injection moulding is the process that Brown decided choose for the dispenser, injection moulding ensures that even the smallest and most intricate detail is managed. The ribbing of the plastic flows around the curved part of the dispenser (the spine) and the segment that flips open (the trunk), by ribbing the plastic Brown made sure that the product is more durable and...
