What is a Cancer registry? As we all know cancer is a serious medical condition that has majorly affected many lives and the lives of their love ones. Continued research is crucial to the development of a cure to treat the many different cancers that can attack the human body. What do we need to perform research? We need data and statistics. One way to gain this needed information is through Cancer registry's.
In essence a cancer registry is the massive file of all the patients diagnosed with cancer. It includes their patients information, demographics, type of cancer, and treatment. You might wonder how this will help with research? By having this information in one location, you know have the ability to run specific reports showing a multitude of statistical information.
How is this information received into the registry? When a patient is diagnosed with cancer and sent to a hospital for treatment, the information is uploaded by the hospitals cancer registrar into the hospitals personal registry, at regular scheduled intervals the information is then sent to the state's registry and reviewed for accuracy. From their information is sent to National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results program (SEER).
Scientists from all over the world pull information from these databases and apply them to there research. This is why registries are so important to finding a cure as well as applying prevention methods. Without these registries the crucial data and statistical information they provide would not be available.
