One of the greatest general’s who ever lived, his military genius has been compared to that of Robert E. Lee and Irvin Rommel. I know it doesn’t take a general to run an empire, but it does take a smart man. I knew very little about Caesar until I read the play by William Shakespeare. All I knew was that he was a very good military strategist and that he conquered most of Europe. After reading this play I learned the wrongs that his fellow Romans bestowed upon him. I learned that he was never really a king of Rome, but that he was offered the chance and that he denied it.

Julius Caesar may not have been the most modest of people, but I believe that he had a kind heart, leaving everything he loved to the people of Rome; a strong personality, being as constant as the northern star; and I know he’s what the people of Rome wanted for a leader. So knowing this, when asked whether I think Caesar should have been killed or not I come to the not unfounded conclusion that he most certainly should not have been killed. He had strong leadership qualities that neither Cassius nor Brutus could match, and there was really no reason for his death.

You can’t say that nobody warned him though. His wife Calpurnia had a premonition of his death, and of all of the Roman’s bathing in his blood. He was also warned by the soothsayer, not once but twice! When he told the soothsayer that the ides of March had come and that nothing had happened, the soothsayer replied, “Ay, but they have not gone.” Artemidorus tried to warn Caesar by a letter, but it seems like Caesar took all of the warnings for granted.

I don’t really understand where Cassius and Brutus came from when they decided to kill Caesar. I guess jealousy makes you do things that you ordinarily wouldn’t do. I know that Caesar was letting his power go to his head, but does it really matter when you love the people and the people love you?
