Arthur Ashe was a great tennis player of his time. In his 10-year career he had received many honors and rewards, including three Grand Slams singles titles and over 800 victories in tennis matches. This made him a legend, but professionalism in tennis wasn’t the only thing that made him, it was because he had took advantage of his status and spoke out about injustice in both the tennis world and society.
Arthur Ashe was the first African-American to play for the American Team. His inspiration came from his mother, Mattie, who enjoyed tennis. Arthur, as a child, had declared that he would someday become a professional athlete. He then decided to become a tennis player as he picked up a racket for the first time and showed an exceedingly skill playing tennis. His career successful as his international fame grew as he played for the American Team and won the Davis Cup. This however wasn’t his greatest accomplishment.
The greatest accomplishment that Arthur Ashe made was his care for the African People. Arthur Ashe attempted to apply for a visa to South Africa for the South African Cup, however he was denied the visa because of the color of his skin. Outraged, Arthur Ashe decided to take a bold stand and spoke out against such discrimination. Numerous organizations and individuals backed Arthur up as that he was the American #1 tennis player meaning he represents the United States in any tournament. Arthur Ashe spoke out against the oppressive government of South Africa, soon through Arthur Ashes’ initial efforts, Africans realized and saw the change in their government.
Arthur Ash is truly a legend, both on and off the field. He was always above personal glory and individual accolade that makes his legacy unique and important.
