The atmosphere is a forever–moving shell of gas that surrounds our planet, harming and protecting life on earth at the same time. Its turbulence is caused by the uneven distribution of the sun’s energy over its surface, causing parts of it to rise and the others to fall. Thus creating winds and carrying moisture from one place to another.

The atmosphere is among the most unpredictable aspects of nature. It protects life on the surface by block from it the powerful radiation and most asteroids from space. Without it earth would be an uninhabitable world covered by craters. It also keeps the surface warm by trapping the heat from the sun with a blanket of gases such as carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapour. These gases absorb the heat and radiate it back to earth.

However, our great protector also harms us in many ways. The sunlight hits the atmosphere unevenly, causing parts of it to rise with heat while the others fall with coldness. As a result, winds are created. These winds can be anything from mild, barely noticeable breezes to massive hurricanes that tear down buildings. Many people die in these demonstrations of Nature’s fury. Which also brings floods and typhoons.

Some of the problems with the atmosphere are, however, due to humans. In our modern lifestyles we all have big refrigerators and flashy cars. It is these things that are slowly killing the atmosphere. It has now become common knowledge that there is a massive hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic region. Without the ozone the UV radiation from the sun flows freely onto earth. Giving Antarctica and Australia a high rate of skin cancer. Apart from this, the exhaust from cars is also adding to the already dangerously high greenhouse effect. At this rate in a few decades time all the polar ice will be melted by the extra heat that has been kept in. this means that most of the pacific countries and all of the islands will be completely submerged by the increase in the sea level.
