Egypt


     Out of all of the mystifying places in the world, Ancient Egypt is the most mysterious. Egypt is very interesting, but it always leads people to great curiosity. What is so unique about Ancient Egypt? After you read this essay, it is guaranteed you will find out.

Egypt is located on the continent Africa between Libya & Sudan. 94% of their people are Muslims (mostly Sunni), 6% Coptic Christians & other. Its official language is Arabic & its capitol is Cairo.

Egyptians believe in many gods & goddesses. To be precise, they believed in 173 gods & goddesses. The most popular are Amun, Anubis, Aten, Atum, Bastet, Bes, Geb, Hapy, Hathor, Horus, Isis, Khepri, Khnum, Maat, Nephthys, Nun, Nut,Osiris, Ptah,Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Sekhmet, Seshat, Seth, Shu, Sobek, Tawaret, Tefnut, Thoth. The beginning of the gods started out like this. First, there was only dark water & a hill named Ben-Ben grew out of it. On top of it, was the first god Atum. He coughed out two gods Shu, God of Air, & Tefnut, God of Moisture. They had two children, Geb( god of earth) & Nut ( god of sky). Nut and Geb had four children named Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys. Osiris & Isis became king & queen of earth. Seth became jealous of Osiris so he killed him. Isis & Osiris had a son named Horus & he fought Seth to reclaim the throne. Horus became god of earth & Osiris god of underworld & the story went on from there.

Egypt had 20 dynasties of kings. A dynasty is a series of rulers from the same family. There are 3 kingdoms of dynasties. The Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom & New Kingdom. The most famous king from the Old kingdom is Zoser. He was an brilliant king who ruled in the 2600s B.C. The most famous king from the Middle Kingdom is Mentuhotep I. The new kingdom contains the most famous kings such as Ramses, Tutankhamen, Amenhotep & many more. Tutankhamen was a king when he was 9 years old! King Tut wasn’t king for very long & didn’t do much for the people, but he is famous because his tomb was almost in perfect condition. It was only robbed once, but it was put back as soon as possible. His tomb weighed 300 lbs. in gold! King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter& Lord Carnarvon. Lord Carnarvon was a rich man who owned the right to dig in search for King Tut. Howard Carter was appointed by him. They were in search for his tomb for five years. King Tut’s original name is Tutankhaten. He died at the age of 19. Many scientists think King Tut was murdered because his skull is bashed & they think an official murdered him because only someone with great power could come near him to kill him.

“Man fears time, yet time fears the Pyramids”. Egypt is very eminent for its pyramids. Pyramids are tombs for Pharaohs & queens. There are about eighty pyramids known today from ancient Egypt. The three largest pyramids are the “Great Pyramid “, built for King Khufu.

Another famous pyramid is the Sphinx located at Giza. The word “sphinx” means strangler. The sphinx represents King Khafre. It is supposed to be 150 ft in height.
