THE OWL
THE PURPOSE OF THE LAB WAS TO LEARN THE PROCESS OF ANIMAL LIFE, SPECIFICALLY THE OWL. DURING THE CHEMISTRY LAB ONE GETS TO PERSONALLY SEE AND EXPERIENCE THE OWL PELLET AND TO LEARN THE FORM/CREATION OF AN OWL'S DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. AFTER PERFORMING THE EXPERIMENT ONE CAN EASILY NAME THE MANY BONES OF AN OWL’S PREY. SO, THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS LAB is to see what information about an owl’s diet and niche can be learned from an owl pellet.
STRIGIFORMES IS THE SCIENTIFIC NAME FOR THESE SILENT PREDATORS OF THE NIGHT WORLD. THEIR FEATHERS ARE ALWAYS OF NATURAL COLORS SO THEY CAN BLEND INTO THEIR ENVIRONMENT. USUALLY, OWLS WEIGH FROM 14.1-24.7 OZ, ALSO THEY ARE AROUND 12.6-15.7 IN TALL. THESE BIRDS OF PREY HAVE A WING SPAN FROM 39.4-49.2 IN. FURTHUR THESE FASCINATING CREATURES CAN TURN THEIR HEAD AROUND IN A 180 DEGREES! On the floor of abandoned buildings, at the base of telephone poles, or under the structures that
offer shelter from inclement weather, you may find signs left by these birds that most
people see infrequently.   These objects are usually dark green and measure from 1 ½ to 3
inches long and ¾ to 1 inch in diameter.   They teach one a lot of information about
wildlife. They are the owl pellets. Owls are not picky eaters like certain other raptors
(animals with hooked beaks and sharp talons fit for seizing prey). The owl, like many
other birds, swallows its prey whole.   A PELLET IS A WAY FOR THE OWL TO DISPOSE OF THE
PARTS IT CAN’T DIGEST. THE PELLET COMES FROM A SAC CALLED A CROP (WHICH IS A
PLACE FOR THE OWL TO STORE UNDIGESTED FOOD). THE BARN OWLS MAIN HABITAT IS
MOSTLY ANYWHERE THERE IS A SORSE OF FOOD. SUCH AS FORESTS OR DESERTS. AN OWL
HAS MANY FASINATING SENSES FOR AN EXAMPLE THEYARE SILENT IN FLIGHT, EXCELLENT AT
DETECTING THEIR PREY,THEY HAVE AMAZING LOW-LIGHT VISION, HAVE BEST ANIMAL
HEARING, STRONG CLAWS, AND UNBELIEVABLE STRENGTH IN THEIR BEAKS. Owl pellets can
provide evidence of the owl’s dietary habits...
