To Kill a Mockingbird

The novel is set in the years of Great Depression in the south of the USA, in the city of Maycomb. Atticus Finch, the protagonist of the novel, is a lawyer, a widower raising two children – Jem and Jean Louise nicknamed Scout, with whose eyes readers see the story. “Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he playes with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment”

The story begins one summer day when Jem and Jean Louise meet their neighbour’s nephew, Dill who comes to spend summer in Maycomb. Children make friends and pass their days in playing and performimg little drama perfomances. Being tired of routine, Dill has an idea of making Boo Radley come out. Boo Radley was a ghostly neighbor, the younger son of the strange and reserved family who hasn’t appear outside the house for years. Children only manage to approach the house and then run away in fear.
The following autumn Jean Louise starts to go to school. At first she rejects attending school because according to the new educational system she’s not allowed to read even if she can but then makes a bargain with the father and proceed with studying. One afternoon Scout finds a little present in the knot-hole near the Radley’s house, later children finds some other and decide to save them. Soon comes the summer and Dill arrives to Maycomb. Jem and Dill begin to role-play scenes about Boo Radley and Jean Louise keeps aloof from them. She begins to spend time with their neighbor, Ms Maudie Atkinson, a wise elderly lady. One evening Scout asks miss Maudie about Boo, and Miss Maudie refers to everything that is said about Arthur Radley as tall tales but admits that “the things that happen to people we never really know”.
