How the Nurse and Friar Are Important to Romeo and Juliet

  In William Shakespeare\'s Romeo and Juliet, the nurse and Friar Laurence play an enormous role.   Both not only influence Romeo and Juliet and the story through their counsel, but also through their actions as well.   If the decisions of these characters had been dramatically different then maybe tragedy would not have come upon both Romeo and Juliet.  

Both the Nurse and the Friar affect the story massively.   If the friar had decided to deny Romeo’s request for him to marry both Romeo and Juliet then the young couple would not experience tragedy. The nurse also changed the way the play would end. Had she not consented to meet Romeo and talk with him, Juliet would never have known if Romeo had intentions to get married or not.   Also if the nurse decided to keep putting off telling Juliet what Romeo had said then Juliet may have given up hope and decide that Romeo didn’t love her.

Here is a brief description of the characters and how they personally altered the end of Romeo and Juliet.   Friar Laurence is a Franciscan friar who not only helps Romeo, but aids Juliet also throughout the whole play.   Some choices he made determined the ending of the play and if he had made choices, which were entirely opposite his original choices, the play may not have the ending it has.   One of these choices was when he married Romeo and Juliet secretly.

            The nurse is a part of Capulet’s house. She is a very down to earth woman, who like the Friar, will be sure of Juliet\'s happiness at all costs. This following quote is an example of this.   “But first let me tell ye, if ye should lead her in a fool\'s paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behaviour, as they say; for the gentlewoman is young; and, therefore, if you should deal double with her, truly it were an ill thing to be offered to any gentlewoman, and very weak dealing (Romeo and Juliet, Act 2, Scene 4, Line 107).   That quote shows that the nurse is very loyal to Juliet.
