Exploration of the Main Theme

The play Romeo and Juliet is written by William Shakespeare, in the 16th century; the play explores the incident of what or who is responsible for their death.

The main theme explored in the play is fate; Shakespeare immediately tells us that Romeo and Juliet are ruled by fate, and there is no escape; the book opens by telling us that Romeo and Juliet will die no matter what. Romeo and Juliet’s fate was discovered even before they were born as it was written in the stars.

The evidence that shows us that Romeo and Juliet are ruled over fate is right at the beginning of the play which opens with the prologue, and we are immediately told:
‘A pair of star cross’d lovers take their life.’
Shakespeare tells us that death is determined for Romeo and Juliet, the words star-cross’d lovers’ means that they are both ill fated, and destined to die.

Throughout the prologue the play tell you more about their death; the more we read on, the more fate seems to be getting involved in Romeo and Juliet’s lives.
‘The fearful passage of their death-marked love,’
Shakespeare again tells the reader that Romeo and Juliet are doomed to death, the words ‘fearful passage’ explains that during the play Romeo and Juliet will not last, and neither will their lives that will eventually be taken away.

Although we blame fate straight away, fate cannot simply be the answer, but there must be more factors that are to be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Even though fate traps Romeo and Juliet by their fatal flaw, many things happen to their misfortune and is not their fault.
