Explain Trotsky’s contribution to the success of the Bolsheviks up to 1917-1922
Trotsky’s contribution to the success of the Bolsheviks was of great importance. He was a fantastic leader who had the necessary qualities to lead communism into power. Other political groups could see the threat he posed and the Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky and had him arrested and imprisoned.
The Bolshevik leader made a deal with the Russian Prime Minister to release members of the Bolsheviks from prison so that they would defend Petrograd with their army. Trotsky, on release from prison,immediately enlisted 25,000 men to defend Petrograd. Trotsky’s brilliant tactical mind came into play by taking over all communication links in Petrograd (e.g. Banks and bridges). He made this Revolution come across as self-defence from the troops moving forward by Lavr Kornilov. This gained huge support for Trotsky which helped give the Bolshevik’s even more supporters.
Trotsky’s brilliant leadership qualities lead to him being made People’s Commissar. This was a difficult task because he had to create a treaty which would not hinder Russia massively. He made calculations that with Russia leaving the war and the USA joining it that Germany would soon fall and have a revolution which would mean Germany having a communist party leading it. This unfortunately didn’t happen because Germany threatened to attack Petrograd. Lenin would not allow this and forced Trotsky to agree to the terms Germanywanted. Trotsky’s calculations were only a few months late and his thoughts almost became true.
Although Trotsky’s wishes did not come true it didallow him to lead the new Communist Army which would be fighting for the Bolsheviks. The army consisted of workers and peasants who Trotsky believed could not be trusted to win wars because of their inexperience. This meant he called up old experiencedofficers from the old army.
