What Church Should Be

In describing what the church should be, I like to use the analogy of the dinner table.   At that dinner table, a family joins together to share a meal.   It’s where stories are shared and fellowship takes place.   It’s a time and place where family and friends all come together for a common purpose.   This is what church should be like.   Coming together to fellowship, break bread, and praise the Lord.   The church is a family of believers. The church should be overflowing with the fruits of the spirit- love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
The church should be made up of imperfect sinners.   Through our imperfections and through our sinning comes growth.   The church should constantly be growing – in knowledge, faith, spirit, size.   It should be built up in love on a foundation of the Bible and Christ.   Church denominations are only comfort zones and none is holier than the next, as long as each is built of a firm foundation of the Bible and Christ.
Ephesians 4:3-5 reads, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.   There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope when you were called – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”   The church should be made up of many parts but one body, because “three cords are stronger than one.”   1 Corinthians 12:12-31 describes this as when one of us suffers, we all suffer.   When one of us is honored, we all rejoice.   As a church we should protect one another, building each other up and aiding one another.
We are the body of Christ.   We should strive to be the hands and feet of Jesus and “imitators of God” (Ephesians 5:1).   The church should always be of service to others, continuously looking for ways to show Christ to others and to plant seeds that one day will grow.
