Naturalism

      Tess of the d’Urbervilles, written by Thomas Hardy, can be related to naturalism because of the message it conveys talking about destiny, feelings, and death. In this movie a man named Alec takes advantage of Tess. Tess believes it is all her fault for what had happened and feels dirty and guilty.   She has a child from this rape he is christened Sorrow because of the feelings he brought; however, he shortly dies after birth. Every life ends in fatality; every human is mortal that fact is inevitable.
      The realm of nature and our destiny is already set for us, what is meant to happen will happen even if shouldn’t happen. Our lives are shaped by what we do, say, and those we associate with. Not everything that happens to us is directly our fault as an individual but may have been affected by someone around us, like Alec raping Tess; it was not her choice, it was wrong and hurt her deeply.
      Tess feels guilty after the rape constantly blaming her even though it was not technically her fault.   After giving birth to a son and him dying shortly after birth, she returns home and enjoys some happiness and ends up falling in love and marrying a man named Angel.   After their wedding she tells him what has happened to her and he also shared some mistakes he made in his past.   She forgives him but he fails to forgive her. He goes to Brazil to establish a farm and leaves her behind so that he may gather his thoughts.
      Death is a major part of our society. Every person born eventually dies, some are murdered, some are suicidal, some die naturally, and some are criminals and sentenced to death.   Tess murders Alec when she stabs him to death with a weapon. She runs to find her husband Angel and he agrees to help her after learning of what she had done. They hide in an old mansion for a few days before continuing on their journey together.
