The Night Spies

The Night Spies by Kathy Kacer is the continuation of The Secret of Gaby’s Dresser. The Night Spies takes place in the middle of World War 2 and it is about a fourteen year old girl named Gaby, her mother Judith and her cousin Max. The story takes place in a mountain village of Oslavica. An old friend named Joseph brings them to the village in his truck so that they can hide in a farm with a family that volunteered to help, the Kos family.
  After weeks, Gaby and Max got tired of their hiding place in the hayloft in the barn of the Kos family and go outside for a stroll even though they are forbidden. On their walk in the woods, they find a road that is being built for the German’s troops. On another walk Max finds a revolver but it is broken. The granddaughter of the Kos family whose name is Eva discovers their secret and asks to go with them on their next night walk, if there is a next night walk. The weather is getting muddy and the German troops are increasing.
  Finally, a couple weeks after the trio thinks its time to go on a night walk again. That night they met at the barn entrance and started their night walk. They observed the road for a while then Gabi tells the others that it is time to go back. On the way back they here a nearby noise. Thinking that it’s a German, the trio runs. Eva leads the way and brings the group to a secret place in the woods. There they rest but not long after a sound comes from behind a tree and a group of men and women jump out. After a long discussion, the children finally realize that the people in front of them are not German soldiers but partisan soldiers. The soldiers bring the trio to their camp and ask them some questions. The chief of the partisans asks if they would like to become their scouts. Not knowing what to say Max shouts out yes. The trio tells the soldiers what they heard on the radio and then they leave.
  The German troops are getting larger and larger in the village and the night walks are a lot longer...
