The Great War: Moderately Great for Canada, with enhanced evidence and analysis
On Sunday, June 28th1914 two lethal shots were fired in Sarajevo and The Great War had commenced. Britain joined the war among France and Russia forming The Triple Entente. At the time Britain was in control of Canada’s foreign affairs. This was Canada’s first war, thus lacked experience. The Great War was moderately great for Canada because although they significantly achieved greatness economically and militarily, there was a loss politically and socially.
Additionally, during the war many people in Canada were treated unequally. World War I was the first time women gained the right to vote. But only women whom husbands, brothers, and sons that participated in war were allowed to vote. (Cruxton & Wilson, pg 116) This is inequality because all women should have the right to vote. Besides women voting, many members of minority groups did not have the right to vote. There was neither harmony nor equality. Another sign of inequality was minorities that wanted to participate in the war. Many volunteered for enlistments, but they had no opportunity to join. No minorities were authorized to participate in the war. (Cruxton & Wilson, pg 75) People described it as a white man’s war. Some minorities such as Aboriginals got to join the war, but in return they received nothing. (Mistry, April 4 ,2008) Discrimination of minorities and women provides evidence of inequality and discord. Canada could not keep harmony and there was conflict. Some women did get the right to vote, but ultimately there was inequality and Canada did not achieve greatness politically and socially.
Ultimately, this was Canada’s first war and it was a learning experience. After the war was over, Canada gained more respect and independence as a nation.
