When I was only four-years-old I had a close encounter with a dog. The dog got excited and jumped on me and almost bit my face. Since then I have been terrified of dogs for a long time. My friend has an American Pit Bull Terrier and when I’d go to her house she would have to put her dog outside or in another room because I was terrified. Her dog especially scared me because of what I had heard of the Pit Bull breed. I do not remember how it happened but I began to like her dog – other then when he would take up all the room on the bed or couch – he was friendly. It was surprising to me that I overcame my fear of dogs with what is considered one of the most dangerous breeds.
      On August 29, 2005 new legislation came into effect in Ontario. By October 28, 2005 all owners of Pit Bulls in Ontario had to comply with the new legislation. For owners the law states that their dogs are to be spayed or neutered and must be muzzled and leashed while in public. As well you now cannot purchase or breed any Pit Bulls in the province.
      Pit Bulls should not be outlawed in Ontario, let alone anywhere else. Yes they are considered a dangerous breed, but are there not other breeds out there that are just as dangerous? Is there justification to such canine genocide? Will it really make our communities safer? People need to ask themselves these questions.
      Almost anyone could say that there are dangerous dogs out there. Will they all say that the Pit Bull is the one they would consider most dangerous? All dogs have the ability to attack just as humans do. Not all dogs attack nor do humans. Every dog is different and so is every human. There are bad dogs in all breeds, so what says that all Pit Bulls are bad? Yes Pit Bulls have gotten a bad reputation from how the media have portrayed them. The media will more likely broadcast a child being attacked by a Pit Bull before they would air anything about a golden retriever attacking someone. I’d like to point out another...
