The Lady or the Tiger
I am positive that the tiger pounced out the right door and mauled the princess’s lover. One of the main plot points in the story is the fact that the princess and the king are somewhat semi-barbaric, and I believe that the author mentioned that because he wanted to give some kind of hint. In this paper, I have included parts of the story to help explain my reasons.
“It was one of the fairest and loveliest of the damsels of the court who had been selected as the reward of the accused youth, should he be proved innocent of the crime of aspiring to one so far above him; and the princess hated her.”
The princess harbored a deep hate for the maiden that was chosen to stand expectantly behind the door, and I can only imagine what it would be like to have the heart-breaking decision to choose which door to tell who would be standing, asking me. I don’t think I would be able to take standing, watching my worst enemy joyfully jumping into the arms of her soon-to-be husband.
“_How often, in her waking hours and in her dreams, had she started in wild horror, and covered her face with her hands as she thought of her lover opening the door on the other side of which waited the cruel fangs of the tiger!
But how much oftener had she seen him at the other door! How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady!”_
The way Stockton describes the princess imagining her lover picking the lady makes me sure that the tiger was behind the door he picked. The princess seems not nearly as bothered by the thought of he lover being strewn across the arena in pieces. Women can boil up- with jealousy, and I believe she wouldn’t be able to stand the thought of her lover being with one of her enemies. The section also describes the princess thinking about her lover’s delight if he happened to pick the door of the lady, and I think that is another clue...
