HPV- Vaccination  
Gardasil, a vaccine that protects against HPV (human papillomavirus), has
become a very common word in Canada since it was approved in 2006. “In 2006, the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first preventive HPV vaccine,
marketed by Merck & Co. under the trade name Gardasil. According to a Merck press
release, in the second quarter of 2007, it had been approved in 80 countries.” (Gilbert,
2009) It should be mandatory for all women to get this vaccine due to the social
conditions that can be improved due to the heath benefits of the HPV shot; they can
also improve our economy due to the people then saving money on health care that
occur out of the treatments of cervical cancer and even with all the potential benefits of
the HPV shot; it will benefit the government and the laws and politics of various
countries. The HPV shot can be a great source of positive change for Canada and the
World and because of this they should receive more funding and support.
When a person doesn’t take the safe precautions while having sexual contact
with a person there can be severe consequences. Why not try and protect yourself from
some of the diseases out there? TV commercials featuring young girls chanting "I'm
going to be one less" are quite ordinary, and now the vaccine, which protects against
the four types of HPV that potentially can lead to cervical cancers and genital warts, is
being recommended for girls ages 9 to 26. “Both Gardisal and Cervarix protect against
infection with two high-risk types of HPV (16 and 18) and two low risk types (6 and 11).
HPV types 16 and 18 cause approximately 70% of cervical cancers and HPV types 6
and 11 cause approximately 90% of genital warts.” (Allen, 2008) This Vaccine only
protects against the HPV types listed above, it does not protect against any of the other

low or high risks of HPV. The vaccine does not have any use to an existing HPV...
