High Achieving Scholarship Essay
The High Achieving Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to students who show a very high potential and who have scored over 29 on the ACT. The people who receive this scholarship also demonstrate leadership qualities. In my first semester I managed to earn a GPA of 3.82.
I think that one way I have demonstrated my leadership qualities is through the Engineering and Professional Development project that we have been working on. During this project so far, I have been the designated team leader. I collaborate with the group and we determine what times we are meeting, with whom we need to meet with, and what things need to be done during that week. This project has helped develop my leadership qualities. It has given me the opportunity to lead a group and gain valuable feedback from the members of the team, so I know what I need to improve upon.
Another way I have shown my leadership qualities is with the Riverbank Clean-up I helped organize. I noticed one day that the Mississippi riverbank was littered with trash and I decided that something needed to be done about it. I contacted Ron Ulseth and told him about the situation. He helped me organize a team of people to go out and help clean up the riverbank. It was up to me to let everyone know what we were doing and what our goals were for the day. Our main goal was to get as much of the trash cleaned up as we possibly could.
There are three main things I am planning on doing next year to demonstrate my leadership abilities. First, I would like to be a camp counselor at the Engineering Summer Camp. At the camp it would be my responsibility to be a good role model for the students. Also, if any issue were to arise it would be up to me to be able to help take care of it. These students should be able to look up to me, and be able to gain insight of what it’s like to be an engineering student here at Itasca. Next year I plan on organizing another clean-up day.
