      how does Poe immediately engage the reader's interest in       this tale?     Poe engages the reader’s interest by first making the introduction attractive to read. The first word he says is “TRUE!” which makes readers to pay attention to the story immediately. Also, in the beginning of the story, the narrator describes how carefully he opened the door of the old man’s room. This description also encourages the reader’s to keep reading until something big happens.
      What do the stalking of the old man and the post murder details       reveal about the narrator's character?     The stalking of the old man and the post-murder details reveal that the narrator thinks himself of a perfect normal person, and even feel confident about what he's doing. We can see that by him saying "Never before that night had I felt the extent of my own powers, of my sagacity." However, the narrator claims that his exact decisions in committing the murders prove that he isn't insane which shows how not normal he is. Stalking of the old man also shows how the narrator’s over ability of hearing can help him commit the murder but at the same time this represents how truly mad he is.
      Why do the policemen show up at the end of the story? What does       the narrator tell them? Why does he finally break down in the       conclusion?     Policemen show up at the end of the story to show that narrator can’t resist the fear and finally confess in the end. Narrator first treats the police in a normal way as if the narrator didn’t do anything and it was totally fine until he started hearing the heart beating sound. After when he couldn’t stop hearing the sounds of a heart beating and thought the police were laughing at the narrator, he confesses that he committed the murder. He finally broke down in the conclusion because he completely accepted the fact that he murdered the old man throughout the story, and the policemen helped him to perfectly admit....
