Dear Grandpa,

You may know who I am, then again you may not. You left this world before the thought of me even existed. Those two packs a day and countless nights at the bar captured and destroyed any chance there was chance that you and I would ever meet. If you’ve been keeping a watchful eye on me you probably consider me a fool. Due to the fact that I have picked up some of the same habits that pulled you away from your family.

Your oldest daughter has done a wonderful job raising me. She rarely speaks highly of you. She claims that you were abusive, physically and mentally. She loves you though. If you’re plan was to make her a stronger person by trying to pull her down, you were highly successful. Everything good inside me I owe to her.

Grandpa, you really missed out. Were things so bad for you that you were willing to throw away everything? Including a family that loved you regardless of how you treated them? I know it must have been very lonely for you those years after your death. Hopefully you found somebody. Tell Nanny I said hi if you’ve found her yet. She loved you till the day she died, and was never able to give her heart to another.

It saddens me to know that we’ll never cross paths. Mom always says that you and I would have hit it off. You would’ve thought I was the biggest brat, but would see me as a reflection of yourself. Mom said if anybody could have changed you, that it would have been me. I’d give you a bigger challenge then any of your daughters could have ever offered. I tell her she’s wrong, and that I would want friendship over competition. True friendships are rare Grandpa. Doesn’t it hurt to know that you may have missed out on one? It hurts me. But we have all eternity to meet. Hope I see you soon. But not too soon.

With great admiration,

Your Grandson
