George Herman Ruth or Babe Ruth was the first sports superstar. After leading the Boston Red Sox to 2 World Series, he was traded to the New York Yankees. When he was young, Babe Ruth got into trouble frequently because he hated the discipline system of the school he was in. But, by the age of 15 he was playing both pitcher and catcher for the varsity team at his school.
At the age of 19 Ruth was spotted by Jack Dunn, who signed him to his first professional baseball contract. Dunn later was forced to adopt him. This led to Ruth being described as Dunn’s baby, which coined the nickname “Babe”. After being on the Red Sox for 2 seasons, the Red Sox owner decided to sell Ruth so he could raise money for his Broadway theatrical productions. Ruth was sold for $125,000 which was more than double any team has paid for any player. This soon became the worst business decision in history because the Yankees had never been in the World Series, while the Red Sox had won 5.
By 1930, Ruth had a salary of $80,000 which was $10,000 more than the President was making. In game three of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs, Babe hit the longest home ever hit at Wrigley Field which was 500 feet into the stands behind center field.
Late in 1946 Ruth was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his neck and he died on August 16, 1948.
