Nirvana. “All that”.   “Whatever”. “As if!” Baby Tumbles. POGS! Backstreet Boys. Furby’s. Pokémon. Body Glitter. Butterfly clips. Doc Martins.   Spice Girls.
I’m sure that something must come to mind when hearing that list of things. Maybe some of you remember it more than others but this was the 90’s! The nineties were filled with ridiculous, non-existent style and horrible boy bands but I realize that as we get older, we reminisce more and more on how things were. Just the other day I was asking my friend if he remembered the television show “Alegra’s Window”.
Although this period is considered to be the “anti-fashion era” with clothes like over-alls and obnoxious, loud colored shits and tank tops like neon green and orange, the nineties was a very popular time for other things such as video games, especially when Sony released PlayStation in 1994. These video games included Super Mario (throughout the 90’s), Final Fantasy (I-VII), Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong, Tomb Raider, and Metal Gear Solid. With this new technology, arcades, which were extremely trendy in the 80’s, rapidly decreased in popularity.   Besides being able to just play from home, PlayStation was also well liked by young adults because of the improved graphics.
This was also a very good decade for music. Many different genres of music grew such as Hip-Hop (Cypress Hill, N.W.A, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Tupac Shakur), Techno (mostly used by people at raves, which began to get very common, especially during mid-nineties), Bubblegum Pop (Spice girls, N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and Hanson just to name a few), Third-Wave Ska (No Doubt, Sublime, Reel Big Fish, and Save Ferris) and of course, Grunge (Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden) became popular beyond belief.   Also, Parental Advisory stickers became frequent on CD’s, making profanity and sore subjects less taboo.
