Sojourner Truth
For centuries, women were treated as property of men. During the early history of the United States, a man virtually owned his wife and children as he did his material possessions. In much of Europe during the 19th century, women were regarded as “Chattel”- the property of their husbands or fathers. Women were sometimes looked down on as “minors”, in other words, as children without rights or responsibilities. In some countries today, women are still placed in these categories and are prevented from making basic decisions about their own lives. What would it be like if we didn’t have women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner truth to fight for our rights? Would we have the rights we have today? Throughout the history of the United States, Women have made their mark, fighting for all the rights they have today. Women have changed the world in different ways in order to achieve. They have fought to get their education, their voting rights and to have a better jobs with better pay. Although they have been fighting for a better future they think there is still room for improvement.
The speech “Ain’t I a Woman” by Sojourner Truth gives us an example of how many women like her had the guts to step up to many men to defend all the women. She stated in her speech, “That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?” meaning that women are...
