POLAND

Poland is situated in Eastern Europe. The Baltic Sea, a small region of Russia and Lithuania are located in north of Poland. Belarus and Ukraine border to the east, while Slovakia and the Chech Republic border the south. Finally to the east is Germany. Poland covers 120,725 sq. miles and is roughly the size of New Mexico. Forests cover 28.8% of Poland’s land area. More than 50% of the land is devoted to agriculture. While the total area under cultivation is declining, the remaining farmland is more intensively cultivated. More than 1% of Poland’s territory is protected within 23 national parks. Most Polish national parks are located in the southern part of the country.
      The Polish mountains Tatras, consist of the High Tatras and the Western Tatras, and are the highest mountain group of Poland and of the entire Carpathian range. In the High Tatras lies Poland’s highest point, the northwestern peak of Rysy, 2,499 metres. At its foot lies the mountain lake Morskie Oko. The longest rivers are the Vistula, the Oder which forms part of Poland’s western border, its tributary, the Warta, 808 kilometres long. The Vistula and the Oder flow into the Baltic Sea, as do numerous smaller rivers.   The largest lakes, covering more than 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi), are Lake Śniardwy and Lake Mamry in Masuria, and Lake Łebsko and Lake Drawsko.
      The climate conditions are temperate continental. Summers tend to be short but rather hot, and winters can go down to 6°C with snow. Summers are generally warm, with average temperatures between 20 °C and 27 °C.Winters are cold, with average temperatures around 3 °C in the northwest and −8 °C in the northeast. It is also said that Poland has 6 seasons of the year: winter, early spring, spring,   summer, early autumn and autumn, which is very often described in literature as “The Gold Autumn”.
