Summary
Homer’s The Odyssey is a long epic poem set in ancient times. The poem begins in Ancient Greece on a small island nation of Ithaca where a young adult prince, Telemachus, and his mother, Queen Penelope, wait for the return of the beloved King Odysseus. Queen Penelope has been waiting for 10 long years since King Odysseus left for the battle of Troy and has not returned. Now her son and their royal estate are plagued by the queen’s suitors who come to grab the king’s throne.
Odysseus has been trapped by the gods on an Island of Ogyia for the past six years with the goddess Calypso. Odysseus angered the gods when he and his men gutted out the eye of a Cyclops, Poseidon’s children, and when he and his men ate the Cattle of the Sun, The god’s prized cattle.
After being trapped with Calypso for those long years, he travels to Scheria when the gods have a change of heart and want to let him go. All are forgiving of what he did except for Poseidon because of gutting out his eye.
At Scheria, the ruler of Scheria speeds him on his way after hearing his story. He is rushed home by ship in the dead of night.
Once Odysseus gets home, He is transformed by Athena into an old scrawny beggar. He appears to Eumeaus, the pig herder. Odysseus, Eumeaus, and Telemachus, who he also revealed his true identity to, planned how to kill the Suitors when he got to Ithaca.
He slaughtered the suitors and revealed himself to Queen Penelope when he figured out who was loyal to him and who was traitor to the Island nation of Ithaca.

The book is a very good book It has some confusing parts and is very hard to understand if you have never read it before. The Storyline is long and arguous. Since it is an Epic poem, the story can be hard to read at times. If you don’t like to read books with a lot of blood and descriptive deaths, then this is not for you. Yet the Odyssey can
