“The Circus” raises cash for Charity

Miri: A FUN community-lead variety show was held in Curtin University of technology, Miri, over the weekend, giving local performance groups a chance to showcase their talents.

Project care organized the event to raise money for local charities, managing to draw around four hundred and fifty people and raise $6,000 per 400 seats to complete their 1.5 years long project.

Performance acts included local singers, Orchestra, a karate Team, dance groups, Comedy Performances, Magic acts and beatboxing performances.

Gerain Chan, 21, says “actually what I'm concern is the title and the show. I know a lot of people actually expected to see the real circus that consists of animals, ringleader (we do have a ringleader), flying/people throwing etc. So I held an audition to search for unique talent to perform on the show. Besides, I've tried my very best to make people think that this is a great show, despite their expectation in the circus.”

However, Chatherine Chia, 22, who helped organized the charity Variety show   had faith in the planning of the show, even in a short span of time, she says “It was initially an idea from Gerain and Ming Yi, another Project Care member, to collaborate with Miri Orchestra and Choir Society to come out with a charity music concert to generate fund for the solar panel project.”

“It was later supported by all other team members to include performers to perform in different genres (music, talent show, sketch, etc) and we were surprise when we see each other recommending potential performers.” She told the Nothern Tribune here.

She further continues “the namelist was powerful for a much bigger scale charity concert. The title "The Circus" was proposed by Gerain for the organizers to introduce to the public the variety of performances all in one night. Despite the misconception of the designed meaning and actual meaning of the phrase, "The Circus" managed to get much attention and interest...
