Business and Work Environments
  A trade union is a cohort of people involved in similar work or working in the same industry who have banded together for their mutual benefit in matters connected with work. Trade unions exist to collectively represent and protect workers by improving the quality of their working lives.

  In the workplace, both employees and employers have rights and responsibilities whether legal or implied. The relationship between them is mostly affected by how these rights and responsibilities are perceived. For example, employers should comply with all legislation, provide Work Cover, provide all leave requirements, and give notice of termination and so on. Employees should have the right to be a union member, be punctual and perform work to a reasonable and acceptable standard, be accountable for their actions and so on.

  Some strategies adopted by organisations to demonstrate worker’s value include: recognizing people’s contribution to the organisation; telling employees when they have done a good job; allowing staff time off to attend family-related functions.

  Today I’m here to look in to the legalities of the proposals and workable measures which will be effective in helping Bank North to survive the economic crisis.

  Let’s have a look the first of the proposals. “Compulsory redundancy for permanent employees over 50 years of age and voluntary redundancy for all employees over 40 years of age.” This is absolutely an unfair dismissal. Employers wishing to terminate a worker’s employment must have a valid, verifiable reason for the termination, and except in the case of retrenchment or redundancy, termination must be based on the worker’s conduct or performance and notice must be given. One invalid reason under the Industrial Relations Act 1999 (QLD) is discrimination. In this case we call it age discrimination. There are no different between 50 years of age and 40 years of age.
