Tragedy In The Trenches
When
The date is July the 1st 1916.   Our play is set in the muddy, treacherous, bloody battle of The Somme, in the First World War.
Where
The battle was fought in the baking hot, stinking, rat invested trenches of Flanders, in the northern parts of Belgium.
Who
The main character of this story is a tall, young, fit soldier from the busy capital, London. His name is Chalky White and has left his worried mum and brother to join the brave, tough, courageous English infantry as an inexperienced private.   His best mate is Squeaky Shoesmith who also comes from the East End of London.
The play also features an un-named German soldier.
The Battle
All the worried, shaken soldiers are lined up in the muddy, dirty trench and are given their ration of rum. They all say their farewells to their friends that they have been fighting with and then the old officer blows the whistle which every courageous soldier doesn’t want to hear, and they’re up and over the slippery trench ladders and into the line of machine gun fire.
Chalky went up and over with his best friend Squeaky but then after only two agonizing minutes of running, Squeaky was cut down by a wretched German machine gunner. This only gave Chalky more determination. But he had to quickly stop thinking of that disastrous moment because he had reached the German trench.
He cleared most of it out with his trusty rifle with his sharp bayonet in hand but then fought hand to hand with a short German corporal. They both fought strongly for their own lives. Chalky had the determination to win and he knocked the heavy wooden rifle out of the German’s hands and pinned him to the muddy floor with his bayonet. The German begged “ Gott bewahre mich!”(God save me).
Chalky had him pinned for a long minute and stared into his eyes. He wondered if he had a mother and brother like him. He couldn’t do it. He just cursed him, ripped off his name tag and signalled him to go. The German sobbed “Danke,...
