CYBER CRIME : THE NEW AGE EVIL
The term ‘cyber crime’ seems a misnomer and   has nowhere been clearly defined in any statute /Act passed or enacted by the Indian Parliament. Cyber Crime can be broadly defined as “Any criminal activity that uses a computer either as an instrumentality, target or a means for perpetuating further crimes”   There is apparently no distinction between cyber and conventional crime. However, demarcation lies in the involvement of the medium mostly virtual one like computers and sometimes electronic such as mobile phones, in cyber crimes.
In the first place, let us see few causes that make   cyber crimes possible.
1. Storage of data   in comparatively small space on a computer : This makes it easy to derive or   steal or damage or manipulate the stored data.
2. Easy accessibility of data:   Unauthorized access to data is possible by   secretly implanted logic bomb, key loggers that can steal access codes, advanced voice recorders; retina imagers etc. These can   fool biometric systems and bypass firewalls..
3. Negligence by Computer users: Negligence is very closely connected with human conduct. It is therefore very probable that while protecting the computer system there might be any negligence, which helps a cyber criminal to gain access and control over the computer system.
4. Loss / Lack of evidence: Loss of evidence is a very common & obvious problem as all the data are routinely destroyed.
Let us now look at some categories of people who indulge in CYBER CRIMES
1. Children and adolescents between the age group of   6 – 18 years : They indulge in cyber crimes mostly out of inquisitiveness to know & explore things. At times, it may be psychological even. Eg. the Bal Bharati (Delhi) case was the outcome of harassment of the delinquent by his friends.
2. Organised hackers : These kinds of hackers are mostly organised together to fulfil certain objectives. The reason may be to fulfil their political bias, fundamentalism, etc. The...
