Compare and contrast ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, commenting on their content, style and form. How successful are the poets in revealing their characters through their chosen poetic style?

There are many contrasts between ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, although they both deal with love, but different types of love.
‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ is about a love sicken knight. Who meets an unidentifiable person and tell the person about how he met this faery child and falls in love with her. The knight is taken to a grot where he is lured to sleep and is charmed. Now he can only love the faery child.
However ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ is about a woman named Porphyria who visits her lover from a feast at home. As she tries to show her love she is pushed back. Then the lover realises and decides to kill Porphyria. After the lover strangles Porphyria the lover become paranoid.

The main plot of ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ and ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ affects the way not only what the poem is about but it affects many different aspects. The main plot of ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ is that the lover finds out that Porphyria love him fully and the lover murders Porphyria. This is clear show as the text states on line 33 and 41, ‘Porphyria worshipped me; surprise’ then ‘And strangled her.’ This shows that the poem is based on the murder of Porphyria. Nevertheless in ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ the idea behind the plot is the knight’s personal experience of what happened. The text explains this as it says, ‘And this is why I sojourn here,’ this explains that the poem is about the story of knight experience and why he will never love anyone again. The plot affects two aspects in the poems, the time it is written about and the atmosphere of the poems this lets me move onto the time it is written about.

Even though ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ were written in the in the nineteenth century they were written about different time....
