Audience: A new employee, in training.
Purpose: To teach the new employee how to make an occupied bed so that when the employee is on his or her own they will be able to do it without a problem.

Welcome aboard our team, there are several different things you will have to be trained to do; however, there is only one thing I am going to give you step by step instructions on how to do. You will learn how to make an occupied bed with these helpful hints to make the job safer and easier. I hope you are able to take something from this lesson and are able to apply it to your everyday work life in this field.                                        
                                                 
First and foremost always remember safety comes first, not only for you, but your patient as well. This means make sure your bed is in a position, side rails are up, and the bed wheels are locked. Be aware of your surroundings, and what you have to do to make it a safe environment.   If you become uncomfortable with any situation you are in do not hesitate to get help from someone.                                                  
You never know what each patient’s sickness is so Infection Control is a big issue and you should always use precautions when having any contact with a patient. Make sure all the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is available such as gloves, gowns, and masks.   If this is not available go to your supplies room and get some. There is always special equipment available which decreases the likelihood of injury to you the caregiver. Generally, it requires two or more people to operate it. Always get help don’t ever attempt to use this equipment by yourself. Be aware of your patients care plan and what type of tubing is attached to your patient like oxygen, indwelling catheter, or an intravenous line before maneuvering the patient in any way.
