  a) The topic sentence in this paragraph is the first sentence. “A trip to the ocean can be a relaxing escape from the everyday pressures of life.”

  b) The last sentence in this paragraph is unrelated and can be eliminated. “ You should always be careful to avoid overexposure to the sun at the beach.” This sentence talks about a completely different topic.

2. List four things to look for when proofreading.

  1) Misspelled words
  2) Improper punctuation
  3) Wrong usage of sentence structure
  4) Wrong usage of like words such as “their and there”

3. a)     A cliché is a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its   intended force or novelty.   (Worn-out)
b)     If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

4. Brainstorming – Make a list of things that come to mind.   You don’t have to worry about whether you will use all the information. In most cases, you won’t.
Free writing - You fill a piece of paper with thoughts and ideas that come to mind and use all                                                                   your thoughts to write about a particular topic.
