The Role of religion in politics

Religion is often described as a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.   It is a set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

Politics is defined as the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs.

Across the world, religion has played a big role in politics.   States have committed religious discrimination. The classic case of state persecution of a religious community is that of Nazi Germany against the Jews. But there are, of course, numerous other situations in which the state may use its power to discriminate against religious groups. Such examples include Saudi Arabia’s severe restrictions on all forms of religion except those consistent with Wahhabi teachings. China has attempted to prohibit all religious activity unless it operates under the direct authorization and control of the state. The Burmese government prohibits many religious activities of Christian and Muslim groups, “operates a pervasive internal security apparatus” to control religious activity, and promotes social tension among religions. Many states have conducted political campaigns against disfavored groups to which they attach a wide range of pejorative terms. States also may be involved in seeking to enforce religious conformity.   Closest to home, the Pakistani law against blasphemy is designed to promote conformity within Islam and is used disproportionately against Ahmadis, but it is also used against Muslims and Christians.
