Rogerian Argument Rough Draft/Outline
  1. Introduction
  * The issue of marriage rights when it comes to same-sex relationships is arguably the most intensely debated subject of today. Proponents of same-sex marriages claim that the barring of such activities is both unjust and a violation of their fundamental rights to live freely with whomever they please. However complex the opposing arguments may be, the issue at hand is a simple one to define: do all human beings have the right to enter into legally recognized, same-sex marriages?
  2. Summary of Opposing Views
  * In summation, support for same-sex marriage is often based upon what is regarded as a universal human rights issue, equality before the law, and the goal of normalizing LGBT relationships. Supporters of same-sex marriage also argue that opposition to their views often stems from rigidity and/or homophobia. Supporters also liken prohibitions on same-sex marriage to past prohibitions on interracial marriage.
  3. Statement of Understating
  * If one were to strip away the title, the arguments, and the prejudgments they would see that real issue at hand is whether two people, regardless of gender, should be allowed to love each other and have that said love recognized by all the country. In this context, the answer is a clear yes. If not for the issue of legal recognition and tradition, this argument almost seems like a done deal in favor of same-sex marriage rights.
  4. Statement of Your Position
  * The opposing argument supported in this essay, however, suggests that same-sex relationships should not be legally supported under the institution of marriage. This primarily arises from a rejection of the use of the word "marriage" as applied to same-sex couples or objections about the legal and social status of marriage itself being applied under any terminology.
