To Kill a Mockingbird - Paper 16

The story To Kill a Mockingbird is about the lives of Scout and Jem and their father Atticus. In this book an innocent man becomes falsely accused, and one who is portrayed as a lunatic in the beginning becomes the hero at the end.

“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Basically in this quote both Arthur “Boo” Radley and Tom Robinson could be considered as the mockingbirds. Both Arthur and Tom were innocent (just as mockingbirds are), did not deserve to be killed or falsely judged.

The book is split into two parts. Part one of the book mainly deals with Jem and Scouts lives, and scouts difficult days in school. Part two is where I would say that the story truly begins at. Part two deals with both the trial and death of Tom Robinson, and also the death Bob Ewell who had falsely accused Tom Robinson of rape. The true personality of Arthur “Boo” Radley is also unraveled in part two.

To Russ Allbery this novel was quite fascinating and it had a great impact on him emotionally. Russ Allbery noted that all of those who avoid the book due to the fact that it is a story that takes place in a small town in the south should stop avoiding it. The book at first may not seem entertaining, but it does pay off to read it in the end.

Kerry Brown stated “To Kill a Mockingbird is an oxymoron of racism, acceptance, tolerance, intolerance, forgiveness, blame, resilience, innocence and human ugliness.” (Brown, 2010) To Kerry Brown the book was completely contradictory. The way how the characters were expressed in the beginning had changed by the ending. Some of the characters had shown a cruel kindness.

In my opinion I think that some of the events in "To kill a mockingbird" could have been given more explanation. After reading the book I still did not understand why the author wrote about the gift that Jem was given and its significance, and also the...
