Separated Life Regions

In many cities, planners have separated schools, homes, shops, offices in specific areas which were widely separated from each other. Do you think advantages of this policy overweigh disadvantages to the city residents?

  It has been a common practice in many cities that schools, homes, shops, offices were built separately in specific areas. My personal view is that this policy is more of a curse than of a blessing to the city inhabitants.
  Some proponents subscribe to the belief that this policy contributes a lot to enhancing the cityscape through this kind of rational planning. Meanwhile, people can, to a large extent, be relieved from the prevailing working pressure at home, owing to the relatively remote distance between homes and offices.
  However, realities turn out to be different. When schools, homes, shops, offices are separated from each other, residents can suffer from a vast amount of inconvenience in their daily life. To put this in a more plain way, people will find themselves be continuously bothered by the following problems: How can I go to work from home? To ensure that I will not be late, when should I set out? What if there happens a traffic accident? Only if you possess a private car can this dilemma be eased a little bit. But the traffic jam, which has boomed since people flow in and out of the city everyday, still brings headache to people. And this time no one can be avoided. All that have been discussed above will, on the contrary, add to the current pressure on residents.
  It`s widely acknowledged that sometimes people with well-meaning intentions can do evil, as is in this case. I wander whether the planners have deliberated enough to draw up such a plan. In my point of view, this plan is not so wise as it was planned to be and either modification or abandon of this policy should be take into consideration.
