Although there are many kinds of cultural values around the world, they all have some similarities between them. There are factors which cause the differences in the cultural values present; one of the most important factors is time. Due to the changing generations there is a change in cultural values which are carried forward from the past. During the Anglo-Saxon period cultural values such as equality, motherhood, and friendship are used in epic poem Beowulf. Slight changes are made to them in the present movie Beowulf. Cultural values like strength, reputation, helping nature are used in the movie. There is slight comparison and contrast between the cultural values present during the Anglo-Saxon time and the present period.
There is much more fairness in the past generations compared to the equality in the present times. In the poem, Beowulf fights many monsters and dragons and also overcomes most of them. Whenever he fights, he treats everyone equal. Grendel, the monster, is always naked and doesn’t carry any kind of weapons. Beowulf also said that he wants to be fair, and he doesn’t like to fight with the help of the weapon. He said, “That, I alone and with the help of my men, May purge all evil from this hall. I have herd, Too that the monster’s scorn of men, Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none (165).” He fought Grendel without using any weapons and was fair on both sides.
Beowulf is not only fair to the world, but he is also values friendship between his father and Hrothgar, king of Danes. Friendship is one of the very common cultural values in the ancient and modern ages. While Danes were suffering from Grendel’s attacks, Hrothgar hears about Beowulf and asks his help in fighting Grendel. Hrothgar says, “Beowulf, you’ve come to us in friendship, and because Of the reception your father found at our court (190).” They both respect the friendship between Hrothgar and Beowulf’s father, and that is why Beowulf agreed to help Hrothgar save...
