NEIGHBOURHOOD CONCEPT

INTRODUCTION

The concept of Neighbourhood unit organized in the United States during the interwar period. Planning a town commences with the smallest unit which can stimulate community life and a sense of neighbourliness among the inhabitants. Such a unit is called the “NEIGHBOURHOOD UNIT”. It is planned around a primary school or the local shopping centre which caters to the everyday needs of the inhabitants. The neighbourhood unit consists of four to five thousand persons. In neighbourhood planning, physical and social planning is combined for evolving self-contained community living conditions for ensuring a properly balanced population structure. Its physical features deals mainly with the street pattern, location of shops, clinic and clubs, and the layout ensures the segregation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic to ensure safety from traffic accidents to...
