September   28, 2008 was a very special day for me.   I got to attend my first vice presidential debate featuring a very good friend of mine, Governor Sarah Palin.   I was able to see how   an event like this debate comes together.   My eventful day started at the McCain Ranch.   Since I’m a huge politics nerd, this was like Christmas morning to me.
When I arrived at the ranch, I was shocked by how large it was.   One area had several beautiful horses running around and another part of the ranch had several other types of farm animals running around.   When I got there,   Mrs. McCain wanted us to have some lunch.   So we all gathered in this large open pasture type area for lunch; senator McCain, had the kids sitting separately from the “adults”.   I   was later told he did that, so he could talk “business”.   After lunch, I got to ride some horses with the Palin family.     A few hours passed and it was time for Governor Palin to practice her debate.
When Sarah was ready to practice we were all lead into a   big auditorium.   This auditorium was filled with teleprompters, computer screens, lecterns, cameras.   Several key aides were used to represent certain people, such as Joe Biden, the moderator, other important figures.   Me and her kids were used as spectators.   We watched as Sarah was advised on how to answer certain questions, how to “take shots” at Senator Biden.   They took several days to practice.   After spending a few days preparing, they decided to head out to the location of the debate, so they had time to prepare there.
As we got ready to leave, we all got piled into several cars which took us to the airport.   At the airport we boarded a private jet and was bound for St. Louis.   When we arrived in St. Louis we headed for Washington University, which was hosting the debate.   When we arrived at Washington University,   Sarah was able to get a feeling for what it would be like.   I was shocked at how large the...
