The promulgation of the South African Schools Act so a change in the manner in which schools would be governed. It identified a series of clear responsibilities and forced governing bodies to develop strategies to ensure delivery. The limited training offered by the Gauteng Department of Education addressed some of the challenges but it was up to the SGB to ensure that it developed the collective skills to ensure that it could meet the new challenges. Our governing body met the challenges posed to it in a professional and committed manner.  

The regular monthly meetings provided ample opportunity for us to broach many decisions in a democratic and transparent manner. The governing body made a conscious effort to ensure that parents began to realise the role they have to play in the schooling of their children. We firmly believed that it was only through a constructive partnership between the stakeholders that a "quality education" could be realised.  

As the year   draws to an end, we need to reflect on whether we have indeed been able to improve the quality of education at our school. The SGB, school management team, parents, educators, support staff and learners each had a role to play in defining quality education and then agreeing on mechanisms to measure it.

I have come to the end of my term of office and would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the governing body for their support and cooperation. It is only with healthy interaction, unselfish commitment, trust and honesty that the quality of education will improve. The challenge to all us remains, can we ensure that the benefit to the child will always remain uppermost in our minds.

The school has managed to come through a trying period in the education arena with low staff morale, changes in management and the introduction of new governing body members. We have proven that it is possible to advance the course of education provided one is focussed and committed. I wish the...
