Well WW1’s origins are far from simple! There is a huge list of reason. Some arguable more important than others.

In 1900 they were 6 main powers (not including the U.S.A). France, Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. France and Russia promised to help each other if ever attacked in 1883 and in 1907 Britain joined them, forming the Triple Entente. All 3 of these countries thought Germany was too powerful. Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary all formed an alliance in 1882. This was called the Triple Alliance.

Some Long term cause of the war was; Tension between France and Germany, dating back to 1870. The system of alliance; suspicions amongst the main powers;   Jealousy of the size of the British empire, Germanys fears of being surrounded by France and Russia, as well as long standing distrust between Austria-Hungary and Russia.

Median term causes of the war were; Rivalry between British and German navel colonies for previous 10 years. As well as the fact that Germany was building up there armed forces.

The short term cause was the assassination of the Austrian archake, Franz Ferdinand. This was done by a Serbian Nationalist, in 1914. This is what sparked the war off!

In my opinion there isn’t one vital cause. Some may say it was the assassination, but there was so much tension between all the countries it was going to happen no matter what. All they needed was a spark. That assassination gave that.
