Dulce Et Decorum Est

Chose a poem that shows an incident or an event. Say what happens in the poem and show how that poet has used particular words and phrases to give you a clear description of what happened.
Wilfred Owen wrote the poem “Dulce Et Decorum Est” about a gas attack because he wanted people to know what the war was like.
In the first verse we are introduced to soldiers who are walking back from no-man’s land, tired and can hear the noise of gas shells going off behind them. In the second verse we are introduced to a very vivid description of men during a gas attack. In the third verse we are introduced to Owens nightmares about that gas attack. In the forth verse e are introduced to the wounded and what happened to them and the old lie how it is sweet and proper the die for your country.
Owen is a very skilled poet as you can see from his word choice like “trudge” it shows us how tired the men are and how the feet are getting stuck in the mud as they walk. Also the phrase “As under a green sea” is a simile that compares the thick gas and gas mask glass with being under the sea.   Another phrase is “His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin” is a simile that compares the man’s face with that of a devil who had witnessed terrible evil.
The poem contains the theme of war as it is an anti-war message. Another theme is lies because Owen talks about the lie “Dulce et decorum est pro patri mori” which means sweet and proper to die for your country. Also horror is a main theme as he talks about all the men that died were just being flung onto a chart like a piece of meat. Truth is also a main theme as it is an anti-truth message because of the old lie told to soldiers by the government saying it was good to die for your country when it wasn’t.
Owen is very good at imagery because he uses lots of similes, personification and onomatopoeia. An example of onomatopoeia is “guttering, chocking, drowning” it...
