Transcendentalism in Modern Day Society
During the 19th century, Transcendentalism was a major movement started by individuals from Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jack London and Walt Whitman who has influenced music of the 21st century. Many transcendentalist ideas can be found in music, movies, TV Shows, and books. There are many similarities from the 19th century today.
      Weezer, the band, has a song with transcendentalists idea’s written. The song, “Island in the Sun” was inspired by nature and freedom. Weezer’s song explains that by being involved with nature, people forget about all misfortunes and relax. Also, the song explains how when the sun, it helps people lose their mind in an exceptional way that makes you relaxed, “On in island in the sun we’ll be playing and having fun and it makes me feel so fine I can’t control my brain”. One specific transcendentalist idea the song references is how people are able to abandon all of thoughts and let loose by focusing on what is around the environment within, “Where he is, there is nature”(Emerson), everyday people are surrounded by nature and do not realize how precious it is. Following this song, another artist has come up with another transcendentalist idea in music. Transcendentalists have other beliefs beside nature such as how materialism isn’t needed in a person’s life.

      People may have all the materialistic items, but many transcendentalists feel by not having materialistic items in their lives is for the best because they do not need to worry about these un-needed items. The song “Gone Going” by the Black Eyed Peas explains how people only think about materialistic items such as expensive purses, diamonds, cars and many other items, “All that money that you got gonna be gone, that gear that you rock gonna be gone, the house up on the hill gonna be gone, the gold purse on your grill gonna be gone” Black Eyed Peas.
