The Color Purple
As I read The Color Purple, a quote I read previously popped into my head. One from Charlotte Bunch, which reads, “We have to start looking at the world through women’s eyes’ how are human rights, peace and development defined from the perspective of the lives of women. It’s also important to look at the world from the perspective of the lives of diverse women, because there is not single women’s view, any more than there is a single men’s view. This reminds me so much of Celie in this book, and her hidden determination.
As the novel opens, Celie is a young black girl living in Georgia early in the twentieth century as women’s rights were just coming into the grander picture of life. She is uneducated, yet writes her letters in a common language. Celie is entering her teen years believing she is ugly, raped by her father, and that he killed both of their children. She writes to God, simoly because she has no one else to write to. A concusion that can be drawn is, that she believes she is inferior to the world, her family, and anyone close (if anyone is close to her) to her. Her need to tell someone about the terrible events in her life, is great. Like stated, she has no one but she knows God will love her, even though her mistakes are terrible. Nettie, her sister, loves her, but she is too young to understand what Celie is going through. Most importantly, Celie never complains to the Lord, she is just using his friendship.
Adding to this terrible scene, Celie was born into a poor family. Examples of this was sickness in the family like, Celie’s mother was sick most of the time, mentally and physically; there was also a large number of children within the family; and Celie was battered by the man that she fully believed was her father. Celie feels cheated and hurt, but does not fully comprehend why. A series of bad events has happened to Celie that she really lacks self-esteem and certainty of herself. She has...
