ESL 251: English for Academic Purposes Essay 1
Write an essay in response to one of the topics below.  Be sure to use the rubric as a guide to self edit your essay.  Include an outline with your essay. (Use the format provided in class)  Your essay should be at least 550 words. Please include the word count at the end of your essay.  Use the sample thesis statements as a guide when you write your thesis statement.  Make sure your body paragraphs begin with a topic sentence which is connected to your thesis statement .  Read the green section in your New Directions Textbook about how to write an academic essay. There are sample introductions, conclusions, etc.  Finally, re-read “The A Paper” as a model of a well-organized, substantive, well expressed essay.

1. People who come to a new country often have ideas about the country, the culture, and the people long before they arrive. However, sometimes the reality is very different from their expectations. Write an essay describing at least three aspects of American culture that really surprised you when you arrived to this country.

2. We have discussed many values and assumptions Americans share. Each country has its own shared culture. Imagine that some American friends of ours are going to spend some time in your country. With them in mind, write an essay about three values that most people in your culture share. Be sure to provide examples for each.

3. Based on the article on American values and assumptions and on your own experience here so far, what are the attitudes or values that present the greatest challenge to people from your culture.

4. All countries have both positive and negative aspects of their culture.. What do you consider three positive aspects of the US culture that other countries would benefit from adopting? 5.
