NEED FOR THE STUDY:-
Most of the self reported ratings of hearing disability which are available in Indian languages are weakly correlated with clinical measure of hearing impairment (e. g. speech intelligibility) and objective measures of benefit (Horwitz & Turner, 1997). The modified version of APHAB which was basically designed for Non-linear hearing aids is not available for the persons with hearing impairment, mainly who speak Hindi language for communication in India. Therefore, being Hindi as recognized by constitution of India, as national language, there is a need to adapt this self reported questionnaire in Hindi to assess hearing aid benefits for Hindi speaking population.

AIM OF THE STUDY:-
The present study has been undertaken as a preliminary attempt to adapt the APHAB questionnaire in Hindi and to test the reliability on Hindi speaking population.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:-

  1. To adapt APHAB from English to Hindi.

  2. To test the reliability of the adapted APHAB.

METHOD:-

  1. Translation from English to the target language will be performed by an individual who is well versed in Audiology & hearing aids & who has the target language as his/her first language. The translator carefully follows the design principles of the original version.
  2. The translation will be then “back-translated” from the target language into English. The back translation will be performed by a second individual. This person must be unaware of the original wording & very fluent in both the languages.
  3. The back translation is then checked against the original wording to ensure that each translated item captures the nuances of the original English wording.
  4. If there are differences in nuance between the original version & the back translated version, the translation is modified to improve the correspondence between the two versions.
